I was excited to be paired with Brigitte as a conversation partner. On the application I had listed French as my first choice for a language partner, even though I thought chances were slim that a French student was currently attending CIES. But, voilà! C'est bon! I asked her if she would like to meet up for coffee or drinks, and she said drinks! So that we did. Brigitte doesn't have a car, so I offered to pick her up and we went to Waterworks, one of my favorite local bars. We both order beers and discuss all kinds of things. Brigitte is from Paris, has only been here for a couple weeks, and has a PhD in physics!! She's trying to get a position as a French teacher here at FSU, but first needs to pass a speaking exam, and is taking classes at CIES in preparation for it. I think she speaks English rather well, and told her so. She's mostly concerned with having to correctly respond to questions on the spot/without preparation during speaking exam. I tell her I think she'll do great, and that talking together as we are doing right now is one of the best ways to practice responding to new information while engaging in real conversation. She agreed, and said she had a really good time--her first experience of an American pub.
