Topic/skill: General assessment/getting to know each other

 

Abdulrahman and I met at Starbucks (on Tennessee St. next to Chick-fil-A) for our first session, which consisted of getting to know each other a little bit and a general assessment of his English skills. I learned he's from Quassim, Saudi Arabia, he's 22 years old, and that he's been in this country since March taking classes at CIES. I was surprised to hear that he already has a Bachelor's degree in General Law from Quassim University. He wants to pursue a law school degree in America, and is at CIES to prepare for the TOEFL. Abdul is currently in all level 2 classes except for speaking, in which he is at level 3. I asked him what he would like help with during our tutoring sessions, and he said mainly writing and composition class, as well as some help with punctuation. We briefly discussed his upcoming assignment to create an outline for an essay about "Your three favorite places to go on FSU's campus." We decided we will meet regularly at this Starbucks as he doesn't have a car and can walk here from his apartment.
