Topic/skill: Grammar
(adjective clauses and noun clauses)
Saad wanted help
preparing for his grammar test tomorrow, specifically adjective clauses and
noun clauses. [I was embarrassed to admit that I wasn't sure what exactly they
were!] He let me review the handout in his notebook about adjective clauses
(including defining vs. non-defining clauses), and noun clauses. [Ok! I got it!]
For his exam, Saad will need to write a paragraph consisting of 5 sentences
that include adjective clauses, and another paragraph consisting of 5 sentences
that include noun clauses. Exam paragraph prompts include writing about a best
friend, and things you like to do for fun. He asked me for some ideas, and I
suggested we start off with discussing what kinds of things he and his best
friend liked to do in Saudi
Arabia . Turns out they liked playing video
games--specifically a FIFA soccer video game--at one another's houses. As I ask
him questions, we discuss how he might rephrase his answers into sentences
using adjective clauses. This seems to help, and we used the remainder of the
session for Saad to write five sentences about he and his friend using the
appropriate clauses.
