Tutee: Dasom Kim
Level: 3B

Dasom is a really nice girl from Seoul, Korea. At first she seemed a bit timid to use English, but I think she's a lot more capable than she needs to be nervous about, because her English is quite good!

Today, Dasom wanted to work on Speech and Grammar. To prepare, I had a short story with simple sentences, and an article on coffee. First, we went over most of the basic listed questions for the diagnostic assessment. The answers were relatively short, and weren’t very good icebreakers. I was nervous at first, but I tried to keep things fun. However, this resulted in me talking most of the time for the first portion.
After that, I used the first short story and had her read it aloud. She’s a very good reader! Her pronunciation is very good and she’s a fast reader. After she finished reading it, I would read the sentences one by one and then have her repeat after me so she could get a feel for what natural English fluctuation in sentences sounds like.
That seemed to be a good icebreaker, so next I had her tell me about her own experiences. She told me about her travels in Florida and to New York. I’ve made a note to work on her particles, such as “to” and “the”. We also differentiated “swimming at the beach” and swimming in the ocean”. However, I made sure not to over-correct, since speech is more focused on improving the ability to talk, not necessarily the grammar used. That aside, Dasom corrected herself most of the time after I pointed something out anyways.

Overall, it was a good lesson, I believe!
