TS#16 – Sultan

During our last tutoring session today, Sultan and I worked on suffixes. I did this by showing him a list of suffixes and what they meant and words that could serve as examples for displaying those suffixes. Then we would underline the suffix, go over the meaning of the suffix and how it connected to the word. Lastly, I would write an example sentence so that he could see how the word was used. The hardest part about suffixes seemed to be the fact that unlike prefixes, suffixes can change not only the meaning of the word, but can also alter its grammatical function. This confused Sultan when I showed him that the word “read” could change to a verb, noun or adjective depending on the suffix used. I’ve noticed that changing the form of a word is very difficult for him, and so we spent a lot of time dissecting how different suffixes like –er and –able grammatically changed the word read. I explained to him that read was a verb, reader was a noun, and readable was an adjective.
