Alyssa B - CO #2 - Listening Level 4

Classroom Observation 02

Date: July 5th, 2017
Time: 2:00pm – 2:50pm
Area: Hecht House, Classroom 311
Teacher: Angel Rios
Class: Listening Level 4

I got Professor Rios’s class again. That’s cool with me, because I think he’s super inspiring as a teacher, and I think it’s good to see how one person has different methods for different subjects.
Today they were trying out a new curriculum of teaching so these advanced students don’t have to go through the same classes again. (Since they’re level 4, they can’t go any higher.) Because these were advanced level students, their material was VERY difficult—I think it would be for even the average American student. They had to listen to a lecture that was about twenty minutes long. It was a complicated subject, having to do with the government, business systems, pure capitalistic countries, and the economy. Yuck.
The plan was for them to listen to it once and take notes, answer questions, and then listen to the lecture a second time and fill in any questions that they didn’t answer fully.
Things did not go according to plan.
The students said it was too easy! All these complicated questions, and the only thing to go off of was their notes—this was like a regular English class, and I wouldn’t have been able to write fast enough or memorize what was said well enough to answer these without listening to it again. One student didn’t even take notes, he just looked at his phone the whole time, occasionally laughing at something funny.
Mind you, this was the student who at the beginning of class said, “What do you call a can opener that doesn’t work? A CAN’T OPENER!”
It was funny, but GOD that is so cheesy.
Anyways, Rios had them turn in their answers and then had a group discussion about it. They ALL said it was too easy.

              Maybe I’m just not government-inclined…? :T
