Karinna TS#3 Soumai

In our second session, Soumaya and I agreed that it would be easier to meet at her apartment since she does not own a vehicle. Soumaya asked me to help her review vocabulary words and practice her English speaking skills. So in order to incorporate both skills in our 60 minute session, I thought it would be best to verbal review her vocabulary words. First, I would ask her if she knew what they word meant and she had to explain the meaning and use it in sentence. I would then go into greater detail about the word and explain other ways she could use the word in her day to day conversations. After that was done we reversed our strategy, and instead of saying the word I would say the definition and she would have to tell me the word. One word that caught her eye was "nutritious", it reminded her of a healthy meal from back home. When I asked her what that meal was she proceed to tell me how they eat caterpillars. I was surprised and amazed that something so bizarre to Americans is natural to Africans. She explained how the prepare the caterpillars by cleaning out their systems and drying them up with the sun. Then she told me how they cook it with different vegetables and how they eat it with just about everything; rice, salads, soups, etc. Overall, I think this session was a great learning experience for both Soumaya and I.
