Karinna - TS#2 Imani
Imani is my child tutee, he is 10 years old and will be starting the 5th grade this upcoming school year. Since my child had a previous TEFL tutor, for this first session we spent the first 20 minutes observing how the children interact and how much they already know. For the remanding 30 minutes we went ahead and got to know our tutees personally. After a short conversation, I asked Imani to write down the alphabet for me. He was unable to, so we went ahead and wrote the alphabet together. Next I asked him to write a few words he knew, he was unable to correctly spell words such as dog or cow. Imani also struggles with the sounding out letters, which I believe is necessary to have a strong foundation of this skill in order to be a better reader and speller in the future. Next week I plan to practice only a few sounds that the letters, A, S, R and T, make. Then using these letters we will be reviewing how to use them when spelling words. Imani has a long way to go and it might be a difficult journey but with his enthusiasm and will to learn, I believe Imani will be able to spell read at much better rate than he is doing now. I am very excited to be tutoring him and can not wait to see his transformation.
