Annie CO #3
On Wednesday July 19, I observed Felicia's Grammar 3C class at 9am. The class was working on creating survey questions and were trying to find people to ask their questions. Most of the students had already written their questions the class before. Felicia was in the classroom helping students and providing support. I helped Barak to make his questions and then we went outside to ask people walking by CIES. It was good practice for him to speak with native speakers and to ask about things in and around Tallahassee. I'm not sure if Felicia had introduced a grammar topic the previous class, but it seemed more like a speaking class than a grammar class. It was good practice all the same.
Ken TS #6 Mardioli
For this tutoring session, I mostly interacted with Mardioli via Email. I have been traveling these past two weekends, but I didn't want to disappoint Mardioli by canceling a tutoring session.
She sent me over a power point presentation via email and asked me to correct it for her.
I made a concerted effort not to spell out the answers for her, but instead propose questions that would help her to make her own corrections.
She had several mistakes and I have noticed a pattern with her where she struggles to use the correct verb tenses.
I will be working on this with her in the future

Feedback provided to tutee: In today's session, Dojun and I worked on pronunciation, grammar structure, and vocabulary expansion.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dojun is currently balancing a full time job, planning a wedding, and learning English. As such, he is very tired by the end of the day (when our sessions are in Korean time), and isn't at optimal levels of energy for language-learning. That being said, I can already see improvement in his fluency skills-- maybe it's because he's becoming more comfortable talking with me, but he seemed much less inhibited today than during our first session and was able to speak fairly confidently, even though his accuracy was much the same. I think that for adult tutees it is important to keep them engaged by conversing about things they would actually have to talk about normally-- work, wedding planning, how to greet in-laws, etc.-- and using that as a base to discuss grammar, conjugation, and pronunciation.

Feedback provided to tutee: In this session, we worked a lot on expanding vocabulary on various topics.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: For a student who is at as high of a level as Soyoung, I think that one of the most helpful types of learning experience is holding a normal conversation about topics that she finds interesting, and to give her the space to work out how to express her thoughts and feelings on the subject. In this way, vocab words ranging from "tree house" to "Pilates" to "beluga whale" were introduced. I think one of the more challenging parts of this type of learning will be making sure that she gains productive as well as receptive mastery of these words, since they are so random.

Feedback provided to tutee: Dojun has a high level of receptive skills, but struggles with some vocabulary and idioms. The feedback I provided was focused on correct pronunciation and review of some grammar structure.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Unfortunately my notes from this session were lost in a Microsoft Word glitch, but at least that has taught me to constantly save my notes as I go. However, I do remember being somewhat surprised by the types of words Dojun knew-- he is able to use many (what I would consider) high-level vocab words, but doesn't know certain simple terms (like, for example, "nature trail"). I think that this speaks to the type of words students are taught in class, and how maybe only one way of speaking about something is gone over (Dojun knew "hiking" and "path" perfectly fine). On the non-technical side of things, I learned a lot more about Dojun's life and details about his job. I also learned that he is engaged and getting married in the upcoming months, which is very exciting!

For this activity I had pulled up sentence completion worksheets for Tingwei to complete. I gave him around 5 minutes to do each one and went over it with him when he finished each assignment. I started with a level 3 sentence completion worksheet where he excelled but by level 6 I could tell he was struggling. In order to help him with the vocabulary he did not understand I explained to him that context clues can help him figure out what word to properly use when doing a sentence completion. I had background in this because it is very similar with LSAT questions I have also been studying for and told him that even though every answer could technically be correct he has to use the best answer. By using context clues I explained is how you choose the best answer. Tingwei caught on quickly and soon figured out how to finish the problems without guessing which impressed me a lot.

Today I met Tingwei at power plant which is a coffee shop next to the Edison. Its great for studying or just getting work done so I thought it would be a good idea to change things up with my tutee. For this lesson we went over grammar again where I had Tingwei tell me the the certain tenses that needed to be used on what he saw. This coffee shop is outside so a lot was going on for example someone was jogging so I had him use which tense to use when explaining what that person is doing like "She is jogging". He seemed to really enjoy this activity as we were just going off what was happening around us but still learning English.
