Ken CP #1 Camilo

Today was my first official meeting with Camilo, one of the students studying english through the CIES program. We had actually met once before along with another student, Ivan, who I will be tutoring during the course of my own program. I gave them a ride to Recess in my pedicab (what I am doing on the side to make some extra cash) last Friday (6/30/17). We talked about how it was fate (destino) that we happened to all meet up.

As for today, we went to Landis Green to toss a frisbee around and to generally get to know one another. Like me, Camilo is Colombian. He is from the coastal city of Barranquilla, the city where my mother lived from the time that she was 12 until she graduated college. I have been to the city several times in my life and have family who live there too. He graduated with a degree in business and plans on working in marketing when he returns to Colombia in November.

He had been studying english for some time back in Colombia and his english is what I would consider very good - certainly better than my spanish. I asked him if he was having any difficulties in any particular area of english comprehension and he told me that he is not so good at listening to english, but very good at writing.

I asked him if he liked any sports in particular and he said he is currently on a club ultimate frisbee team. He is traveling to Orlando for his first game this week and is going as far north as Atlanta in the coming weeks. I was happy that he is getting the opportunity to see more of the United States. In particular, he wants to see New Orleans - a city I highly recommended that he sees.

I told him next time that I will take him to try a sport that I really enjoy - rock climbing over at the Tallahassee Rock Gym.

Until then,

- Ken Cote
