I met with Turki at the CIES lounge. Turki is from Jeddah
in Saudi Arabia and already has a good deal of English under his belt, since
his father completed graduate school in Oklahoma and had to learn English
accordingly, which he passed on to Turki. We talked about soccer, and Real
Madrid. He is a big fan, and my only soccer knowledge comes from my mom since
Brazil is very invested in the sport. We talked about several famous players
like Pele and Neymar. We also spoke about his roommate and how strange it was
for him to live with someone who rarely spoke. Turki is very family oriented
and a natural conversationalist, and he was quite disappointed that his
roommate was not willing to interact with him for both English practice and a
possible friendship. He told me that last weekend was Eid al-Fitr, a
celebration that marks the end of the month of Ramadan. This celebration is a
time of visiting family and friends and enjoying good food along with some occasional
fireworks, which probably accounts for why I heard some last weekend. I was wondering
why I was hearing fireworks even though it wasn’t yet the Fourth of July.
