Pronunciation (minimal pairs exercises)
Today I worked with
Abdulrahman on pronunciation using minimal pairs exercises. The Arabic alphabet
does not include the letter "p," thus it is difficult for most native
speakers of Arabic to pronounce English words that contain the letter
"p." A common mistake is using a "b" sound instead of a
"p" sound (e.g., "park" becomes "bark"). We
practiced the difference between the "puh" sound and the
"buh" sound, and focused on minimal pairs that begin with
"p" and "b" (bag, beg, big, bog, bug; peg, pig, pog, pug;
bat, bet, bit, but; pat, pet, pit, pot, put; etc.). We also practiced the
difference in the "a" sound versus the "o" sound (e.g.,
pat, pot). Abdulrahman was engaged in both exercises, and was subsequently able
to pronounce those words with more confidence and clarity. I gave him the list
to take home for more practice.
