Abdulrahman started
this session by asking me how I felt about homelessness in the U.S.
He had statistics at the ready--15% of the U.S. population is homeless,
approximately 45 million people. I agreed that it was a serious problem in our
country and asked him what got him thinking about it. He said it came up in his
speaking class, which he seems to really enjoy. I asked him about his goals
after CIES. He wants to go to law school, possibly in Ind ia na ,
to pursue a graduate degree in trade law. I wrote down new vocabulary words
that came up during our discussion (deter/deterrent, aloof, standoffish, down
on your luck), and gave him the list to take home. Engaging in conversation
seems to motivate Abdulrahman to practice English more than anything else.
