Today, Abdulrahman
asked to begin by talking about marriage in the U.S.
vs. Saudi Arabia .
He said he had heard that people in America
don't want to get married, at least not for a long time, unlike people in Saudi Arabia .
"What do you think?" he asked me. I had to agree that marriage isn't
the main goal these days for many people, and that men and women both want to
go after their own goals just as much, if not more, than settling down and
having kids right away, including myself. He said arranged marriages are still
common in his country, but that his parents would be ok if he met a girl in America .
He brought a book called "Staying
St rong" by Demi Lovato (the pop singer)--365
days' worth of inspirational passages--a book he said his older brother got
him. I had him read one of the passages aloud, which was about embracing our
unique selves. It contained a number of new vocabulary words (including
"embrace" and "unique") which I wrote down for him as we
discussed their meaning. I had him read it again, keeping in mind the meanings
of the words he just learned, and correcting his pronunciation when needed. He
said it makes him feel good to read it. I told him how awesome it was that he
found something that he likes to read, and encouraged him to keep at it!
