Topic/skill: Composition assignment

Saad and I met at All Saints Cafe this time, which was a closer drive for both of us and a lot more spacious than Starbucks. At his request, we worked on his composition assignment, which was to read an article of his choice and write a summary about it. The focus of the assignment was mainly comprehension, followed by paraphrasing the content in their own words. He asked me to read the article he selected, about the CEO of Qatar Airways and the accusations that his company is ageist and sexist with regard to hiring/firing female stewardesses. I was in full agreement! As was Saad (which I was glad to hear). CEO Akbar Al Baker boasted that the average age of Qatar Airways' cabin crew is 26, while passengers on U.S. airlines are "always being served by grandmothers." [The nerve!]  Saad and I reviewed his summary, which demonstrated his comprehension of the article and usage of some lower-frequency vocabulary (e.g., supplanted!). I shared my positive feedback, including how impressed I was with some of the more complex sentences he used in his summary. We discussed what he thought the main point of the article was, and its final message to the reader. I wrote down new vocabulary we generated (puddle-jumper, unions, eye-candy, law vs. low) and gave him the list to take home.
