I met with Turki today because he had
some misgivings about a presentation that he had to put together. The
presentation was about a tradition in his hometown that is practiced throughout
much of Saudi Arabia, where the groom goes on a trip to the coast and must
return by sundown to meet his bride. At the very least, this is how I
understood the ceremony. Apparently it’s a very old tradition that dates back to
over four hundred years ago and is used not just as a wedding ceremony, but as
a way to keep tradition alive. Traveling to the coast to fish or look for
pearls was the way of life before modern technology began to encroach on it. Turki’s
main problem was finding the proper transition phrases in order to get his
speech from point A to point B. I worked on this with him, as well as the
actual mechanics of PowerPoint. Turki did not know how to insert a video into
his version of PowerPoint, which is a frustration I am very familiar with, but
by the end of the session we had figured it out.
