Annie TS # 3

I met Hani yesterday evening at the Sweet Shop. During our previous meeting I had noticed that he had trouble differentiating between vowels and could not tell the difference between 'c' and 's' so I compiled a few lists of words to help him figure out when 'c' sounded like [k] and when it sounded like [s]. I made one list of words starting with the hard c and another list with words that began with the soft c. To begin I asked Hani to look at the two lists of words and try to figure what made them similar to each other. He noticed that one list had the [k] sound and another had the [s] so then we talked about some possible reasons why and ultimately we came up with a general rule that the 'c' only sounds like [s] when it is followed by 'i' or 'e'. We went over a few examples. Then we practiced the words we had learned last time and he still struggled with the vowels. We will work on vowels next time. We took break from spelling and read his paragraph. I asked him if he thought anything was missing, so he looked back over and couldn't see anything wrong with it. I then brought up the idea of articles and looking back over the writing, he noticed that he was missing a few 'the's and 'a's so he fixed that. He showed me this cool website called news in levels, which has various news stories in different levels of English. For homework he's going to summarize a news story. We are meeting again on Monday, and we will work on vowels, his summary and reading.
