Ken TS#11 John

John is the youngest of the Uganda family that I am tutoring. I am not sure how old he is, but I believe he is in the ballpark of 4 or 5. Because of this, I had to teach him separately from Peter and Moses. I first tried showing him the flashcards like I did with the others in his family, but it was fruitless.

He was having difficulty keeping focus, so I began by showing him an ESL cartoon about barnyard animals. After the video, I went over some letters on my whiteboard by writing them down and saying them outloud. After I went over 3 different letters, I would ask John what the letters were.

It was hit-and-miss. Sometimes he would guess correctly, and sometimes he would lose focus and divert his attention to something else.

At the very end of his lesson, I brought everyone together and had them answer riddles based on the animals we covered

ex/

I live in the bush
I have 4 legs
I have big ears
And a long nose

What am I? (Elephant)

I cherrypicked animals that John would know like elephant and acted some of what I was saying out to him so he could at least answer a few of the questions.

Like stated before, we played HeadsUp before I left for the week
