I met with Anka last week outside of
Strozier to practice his speaking. I had him read the Gettysburg Address a
couple of times to practice general speaking and intonation (since it is a very
sincere speech and reading it in a monotone takes away any effect of pathos at
all). We talked about the word score, and how it was an old word that stood for
a sum of twenty years. Then I had him practice informal conversation by
performing improv, similar to the examples that Dr. Kennell showed in class but
with a slight adjustment. Instead of restating the same situation in a
different context, such as “what would you say if you left your friend waiting
for half an hour versus if it was your boss?”, I pretended to be an annoying
neighbor and Anka had to politely talk his way out of trying situations.
