Abdulrahman asked me to
read the essay he wrote for his final composition class assignment. The topic
was to write about someone he looked up to, and it was titled "My
Father." He wrote about the great respect and admiration he has for his
father, how close they have always been, and how his father's continuous
support and encouragement led Abdulrahman to come to the U.S. to learn English. His father is
the person who motivates Abdulrahman to succeed. I was extremely impressed with
his essay and told him so. It was well written and, with the exception of a few
very minor errors, demonstrated great progress in his writing ability. He said
he was moved up from group 2 to group 3 in all classes, and that it was
probably because of our tutoring sessions that he got high grades. I thanked
him, but told him it was really the result of his own efforts to learn and
study, and by taking responsibility for his own practice. I think the most
important role I played was merely creating a positive environment in which he
could practice speaking English while engaging in genuine communication with
someone who was interested in what he had to say.
