Speaking/building vocabulary
It was pouring down
rain when we met at the coffee shop today. "It's raining cats and dogs!"
I said to him. He hadn't heard that term before, so we discussed it's meaning
and common usage in America ,
which led to a lively discussion on colloquialisms and idioms--some he's heard
before, and many he hasn't ("Don't bite that hand that feeds you";
"Put yourself in someone else's shoes"; "Caught in a traffic
jam"). He asked me about the saying: "Saving your money for a rainy
day," and told me in Saudi
Arabia they say: "Save your money for
black day", which means roughly the same thing. I wrote down all of the
phrases and new words we discussed, and gave it to him to take home.
Abdulrahman really enjoys learning new vocabulary and exploring the various
meanings of words in English. He studies the new words we generate and even
uses them during successive tutoring sessions! I told him if he wants to use
our sessions to practice speaking, then we need to continue to work on
increasing his vocabulary along with improving his pronunciation.
