Composition
Abdulrahman and I
worked on his composition assignment during our second session--the outline for his three
favorite places to go on campus. He chose the library, the gym, and
"coffee hour"--a weekly social gath ering
for CIES students. We worked on writing his thesis statement paragraph, and
outlining the supporting reasons for the three places he chose. He was
reluctant to write at first, saying that he's got the ideas in his head, but we
discussed how writing his ideas down is an important step in figuring out what
he wants to say in preparation for writing a first draft. He said he doesn't
like the class/teacher, that she talks too much and it's hard to follow and he
ends up doodling in his notebook (he even showed me some), and that other
students in his class agree. I encouraged him to try to stay focused in class,
and to keep working on his writing assignments so that he becomes more
comfortable with the writing process.
[Perhaps this is a case
of the teacher acting more as "sage" instead of "coach"? So
relevant since we just discussed this in class, and I got to see firsthand the negative
"backwash" of that method.]
